Using HJsplit, WINrar, etc….

Since there’s a lot of discussion about “How do I open these files?” or “Why do you use HJsplit or WINrar?”, I’ll try & address all the nuances of these programs in one, lovely, convenient Global Announcement!

If anyone has any advice that I’ve forgotten, please feel free to add in your 2¢!

If a file name ends in either “.001, .002, .003” etc., or “part1, part2, part3”, etc., then HJsplit has been used to chop the file into smaller segments.

With “.001, .002, .003” etc. files, ALL parts MUST be downloaded for the file to be completely opened. In this instance, open HJsplit, select the name of the file you wish to rejoin, (only the .001 will show – the program will automatically find the other parts, as long as they’re ALL SAVED INTO THE SAME FOLDER!)

Simply click “JOIN” and the rest will be glued together… like magic!

For “.part1, .part2, .part3”, etc. files, again, ALL parts MUST be downloaded for the file to be completely opened. For these types of files, one must simply click on the first (.part1) file, then the rest will be opened together, thus gluing the entire file back into one big one.

First, WINrar & WinZip are basically the same program, so I’ll just address them together. (They act the same, they work almost the same…)

WINrar is used to either compress (make a file smaller) or group (attach several files into one folder). WINrar & WinZip also have the added feature of passwords. These can be used for a variety of reasons, but if they are used, it is CRITICAL that they be entered correctly.

One feature of the password is that with out the proper pass, the file CANNOT be viewed. This helps keep the content away from prying eyes, either while on your computer, or while sitting on a File Sharing server…

Some may choose to utilize these programs for file compression. Certain formats are better compressed than others, thus taking up less space, and enabling the users quicker downloading time.

Another reason that some may choose to use WINrar or WinZip to upload a particular file is that, perhaps, the file was previously uploaded to a particular File Sharing Host, but was taken down for a variety of reasons. The use of these programs makes it possible to repost the file, by say, adding another file to the ‘folder’, maybe a small .jpeg or .gif, thus making it an entirely new file.

As one can see, compression is not always the main reason for using them.

To use WINrar or WinZip, simply click on the file name, then it’ll open right up. Simple as that.

I think this should clear up some of the issues around the use of these programs…

For those who don’t like the use of them, well, all I have to say is… there are those of use that utilize them for various reasons (some of them stated in this post). I for one use them, and will continue to use them. If you don’t like these programs, either tell the world of a better way to do what we’ve all been doing, or deal with it.

And again, if anyone has any other advice that I may have overlooked, please feel free to add it in…
