bras and panties

We are preaching to the converted in our own fetish world. Everyone on this forum completely agrees:

“Ladies, please take pride in yourselves and complete your look with high heels and pantyhose!”

So…

How can we reach the masses without sounding like perverts?

Remember Wonder Woman? Dukes of Hazzard? Three’s Company? Love Boat? Silk Stalkings?

How about older media?

Solid Gold? Dance Fever? American Bandstand? Silk Stockings? Singing in the Rain? Guys and Dolls? Most Elvis movies. Sophia Loren. Ann Margret. Cyd Charisse. Yum.

Never did we have to search very far to find a woman in nylon. My female tachers from K to12 wore high heels and nylons TO TEACH SCHOOL most every day.

Where did the nylon go? A teacher nowdays will not wear a dress, let alone pantyhose.

I remember women walking around in tiny shorts called “Daisy Dukes”, including pantyhose and heels. Now we have bare legged Jessica Simpson showing our youth how not to wear nylons. Arg.

Thanks to “Sex in the City”, and others, we now enjoy many women celebrating high heels! Hooray! Thank you!

I know the HBO show is no longer in production, but I will use it as an example.

Why did the costumers of “Sex and the City” completely and utterly ignore nylons? Why can SJ Parker totter around Manhatten in every season in skyscraper heels without pantyhose? I might be able to fathom deep summer bare legs (not really, how about summer sheers?), but what about spring, fall, and pete’s sake, winter.

Too hot in the summer for pantyhose? Ok, wear sheer stockings. Garter belt? In the summer? Sorry, way too sexy for a show named “SEX in the City”…

Kim Cattrail? Loved you in “Porkies”! Nice moaning. Now that you are in “Sex”, put on some damn NYLONS!

The rest of the female cast? Utterly worthless without nylons.

Love the heels costumers, but in every other below the waist category you fell unacceptably short. With so much “fashion”, where are the nylons? Why was this most important accessory shunned?

How much more flavor could you have had in your costumes if you added the myriad styles of hosiery that is available? How many more levels could you have added, not only to your costumes, but to the characters themeselves? Imagine Carrie talking about her shoe fetish while adjusting the seams on her vintage stockings while teasing Mr. Big. That would be an entire episode by itself.

When a character says “no” it limits the character. We want to see a charcter say “yes” and take a chance. A character that would “never do that” is boring. I’m amazed the director allowed such a shallow decision by the costume department.

I’m surprised the costume designer on a healthy budget would presume to limit modern characters in this way. Costumers should be creative. Why limit yourself to ugly bare legs?

The only time I have noticed nylon on that show is when they are specifically seducing someone. Fantastic, you can wear nylons while having sex, once in a blue moon, but never outside the bedroom? The show is about relationships and sex, and , believe it or not, TEASING and ENTICEMENT. Put your characters in nylon. Please.

bras and panties how
Thanks to this show and others like it, pantyhose has been put down as “old lady” and “unsexy”. Are you kidding me?

How can we convince the casual observer simply to don pantyhose?

Every woman these days seems to have a shoe fetish, WHY DOES THIS NOT EXTEND TO HOSIERY???

Aaron Spelling, on the “Love Boat” required all of his regulars and guest stars to wear SHEER PANTYHOSE AT ALL TIMES, even when wearing a BATHING SUIT! Why? Because it made the legs look FLAWLESS! I have heard several interviews about this. Aaron insisted on nylons being worn.

I watched the show every chance I had… alone… and not for the acting.

Somewhere along the line, someone in the industry decided hosiery is not sexy, even though nylon has been revered throughout recorded cinematic history. Think “The Graduate”.

Who made this decision, and why has it permeated throughout an ENTIRE GENERATION?

Oh yes, it is sexy to wear platform high heels, tank tops, miniskirts, and schoolgirl outfits. S&M gear is worn regularly. Bare foot enthusiasts have been in heaven for the last decade plus. You can get tattoos, and be pierced from head to toe.

In fact fetish has become kind of “cool”.’

Except one.

Wear nylons? Love pantyhose? Crave stockings? Prepare to be ridiculed.

Ask a grown woman at a strip club to dress up like a little schoolgirl and she will do it willingly. She will even wear high heels for you and you wont even have to ask.

Ask the same woman to put on pantyhose and you are a pervert, and may even be kicked out of the club.

WHY?

site bras and panties
Is it the fact that are so specific in our desires, that makes any public mention of pantyhose or nylons to be considered abnormal?

It is intensely frustrating to watch most every sexual variation to be accepted and celebrated, while seeing our own personal fetish belittled.

I wish there was a way to get OUR voice truly heard in the mainstream media.
I read your post with interest and what comes to me is that people might actually be afraid of nylon fetish because it is so powerful. Maybe that is good as it keeps the fetish classy. If it universalized the way BDSM, shoes, etc have, into the mainstream, nylon fetish would be thrown into that mash and not be the unique and classy fetish that it is. I consider your observations a benefit and safeguard of nylon fetish. Thanks for bringing this topic up.
Great post, Shvengali.

By and large, I’m with you. It’s painful how much less there is to look at in the way of hose since the early ’90s or so, and it’s definitely not advisable in 2007 to admit in mixed company that a woman in pantyhose floats your boat. (I’ll argue that if you said “stockings,” it wouldn’t be so bad.)

But … beyond there being a lot less to see these days, there’s also a part of me that how the pantyhose/nylon fetish has never been “outed” the way other fetishes have. It keeps the door open, however slight, for everyday sightings. Think of it this way: A corset is an obvious fetish item. Or tall hooker boots. Or a school-girl uniform. So where are you going to see those things worn openly by a grown woman? At a fetish convention, most likely. Maybe on Halloween, if you’re lucky. But probably not at the bank or while you’re grocery shopping. If Hollywood’s influence ever made it so that pantyhose triggered the word “FETISH” for the everyday woman, you’d probably see even less of it out there than you do now. Sure, you’d still have your share of exhibitionists — the same women who wear 6-inch Stilletos and thongs because they know those carry a kinky element that drives the men wild. But the 32-year-old secretary who wears hose to the office twice a week might suddenly stop wearing because she doesn’t want to be turning on this mysterious “fetish” crowd that she never knew existed before.

That’s where the fear and rejection comes from, I think: the fact that pantyhose is a “common” item that carries no sexual connotation at all for the majority of society — women usually see hose as a type of beauty accessory, like makeup. I’m all in favor of more celebrity hose wearing, but maybe it’s better that the fetish itself keeps a low profile, or at least that the rest of the world doesn’t know just how many of us there are, so they don’t cut us off.

Does that make sense?

Also, like the poster above me, I like that my fetish isn’t “mainstream,” so to speak. It’s not spiked collars. It’s not leather pants or a vinyl catsuit. It’s not even fishnet stockings. For me, it’s plain, suntan pantyhose that you can buy at a Walgreen’s for $3 and that a woman can wear just about anywhere. I don’t know that I’d call it “classy,” necessarily. But I like that it’s a complicated mix of functional and sexy and that it can’t just be lumped into the generic sea of fetish gear that you’re bound to get when the local club hosts “Tuesday Night Fetish Night” and 3/4 of the women all show up in the same outfit. I think it would piss me off to see the entertainment world try to simplify our thing along with those other things as something “kinky” and then try to bottle and sell it to the masses.
I understand what you mean, there are less and less women wearing nylons, especially as fashion changes, but I think thats another reason why it makes our fetish special.

When you do find a woman wearing nylons it makes the occasion so much more special. In Manchester there will be business women walking about, mostly without nylons on, so when I spot someone who is wearing nylons, it really draws my attention.

If more and more women wore and wore on a regular basis I think it would be a bit of an overload. Sure at first it would be brilliant, we would all love it, but after a while im sure that it would distract from it being a fetish.

Very well said. One of the things I find so enjoyable about this fetish is the fact that it can be easily indulged in the course of “normal” life. The fact that pantyhose is a fetish object is one bit of knowledge I do NOT want to be publicized.

You know, something else just occurred to me. Maybe we all ought to start telling everyone who will listen that there is a huge proportion of foot fetishists who love seeing bare dirty feet in flip flops above all else.

If THAT story gets out far and wide enough, flip flops will disappear overnight.

I agree with most of whats been said here, however, allow me to put another spin on it.

Like you guys have said, I think it’s great that we can have this fetish and enjoy seeing women in pantyhose on a daily basis. But, I’m not sure women would necessarily discard their pantyhose if they knew how strong the pantyhose fetish is. Take the foot fetish. It’s a common, mainstream fetish that has been accepted for years, yet God knows we don’t see women hesitating to go barefoot or wear flip-flops.

I guess my point is, just because something is labeled as a “fetish” item, doesn’t mean that women are going to run the other way or go out of their way NOT to wear that particular item.

The thing with pantyhose is I don’t think many women really even think about them, period. It’s just like a non-entity to most women. I think the majority of men like pantyhose and the majority of women either don’t like them, just tolerate them or just plain don’t think about them. There are exceptions, of course, as some women wear everyday, because they like the feel or the way it makes their legs look.

Nowadays, when you go to a strip club, 99% of the dancers are bare legged. Why? Becauise they don’t think about it; it’s just not in their minds to put on a pair of nice, shiny sheer-to-waist pantyhose. They think that we think bare is sexy. Most men probably don’t care either way, but we have the burden (and I use that word lightly) of NOT liking bare legs, so we are in the minority. That’s just a fact we have to accept.

I just don’t think that this fetish, if became accepted as a mainstream fetish, would deter the everyday woman from wearing pantyhose. Hell, we’ve basically had a decade plus of nasty, bare legs to look at, and that’s WITHOUT the fetish being considered mainstream.
There seems to be an upswing lately of women in the public eye wearing hosiery. It started with nets, moved to opaque tights, and now some stars are being spotted wearing sheers.

…and not just those ladies of a slightly finer vintage… Younger women have also taken up the cause.

Beyonce, Rihanna, Gwen, Jessica Alba, Rachel Leigh Cook, and Victoria Beckham are a few shining examples of celebrities paving the road for a nylon resurgance!

Do we dare hope???
i think all above post were dead on! very well said. now i dont have the patience to type that much but i will say, back in the 1970-80’s when women wore pantyhose with pretty much any outfit is because it was the “thing” to do. you never heard women downing pantyhose in disgust. they may say they were hot in summer but thats it. pantyhose were in style back then, most women wouldnt think of going out without pantyhose, now most women wouldnt think of going out with pantyhose on because its not in style, its taboo. like Shvengali said, its all thanks to hollywood! 95% of young women today dress and act like these celeb’s whom they have heard preach against pantyhose pretty much their whole lives. these girls born in the late 80’s, by the time they are old enough to know what pantyhose are, all they know is they shouldnt wear them or they are outcast, not in style. I think alot of blame needs to go on hosiery companys too! once they realize that they could get these starlets to advertise pantyhose for them, their business and the popularity of pantyhose will be 10 fold, so i say yes, we can dare to hope. and i would love to see pantyhose more mainstream, not as a fetish per say but its just whats in style!!!

Guess i did have the patience

The last celebrity endorsement I can recall in the USA was at least ten years ago, and it was Tina Turner, who was in her 50s at the time. That should show you where the US pantyhose makers think their market is.

Contrast this with Pretty Polly, who have hired trendy younger UK babes to represent them in the past few years. The Sugababes are the latest example.

Shvengali, I’ve noticed you have a very eloquent writing style. I’m sure you could write professionally if you don’t already.

Anyway, I wanted to comment on the vast difference that people in the US and the UK are reporting right now. We Brits certainly had a pantyhose draught from around 1997 until 2005. I remember in 2001 I could go for weeks without seeing pantyhose. There would be some black opaques in the winter, but not the sheer pantyhose that I love so much.

But things have really changed here in the last couple of years. Have a look at my new messages in the Glimpse of Pantyhose for a description.

We normally think of the US leading the UK in social trends. But in this case, the UK is ahead. In many countries, such as Italy and eastern Europe, I don’t think pantyhose actually went away.

One possible reason for the different trends is that there seems to be a difference in pantyhose between countries. UK pantyhose is often made from a 10 denier or even finer fabric. It looks quite subtle, is soft to the touch and gets runs quite easily. Now, my experience of US hose is more limited, but the pantyhose I’ve seen (and touched) tends to be thicker, much tighter and perhaps a little more artificial looking. Italy and Japan have their own styles as well. Could it be that the US pantyhose is harder to wear, especially given the generally warmer climate?
