Workers of Ontario: ditch the pinstripes and save the planet.

The premier of Canada’s most energy-thirsty province has urged government workers to dress down and leave their business attire at home to cut air conditioning costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“We’re asking everyone to do their part to protect the environment,” Premier Dalton McGuinty said in a news release on the go-casual recommendation, which will be in effect through early September.

“Wearing more comfortable clothing during the warmer months cuts down on the air conditioning we use and increases awareness about how important it is that we address the challenge of climate change.”

Ontario wants provincial government offices to crank their thermostats up to 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit), from 23C (73F) in previous summers. That should reduce electricity use and ease the need for costly imports.

“When electricity demands rise, often we have to import electricity from the U.S., which often comes from coal-fired plants, which are quite dirty and costly,” said Jessica Zippin, from the Clean Air Foundation environmental group.

“Every move toward making people more aware about being more energy efficient is really important … turning up the thermostat, even one or two degrees is extremely important because that has a cumulative effect.”

This just means that Canada is about 10-15 years behind the U.S. in the “Let’s all dress like slobs” mindset.

People amaze me. It’s fucking Canada…I mean, how hot can it possibly get there? I live in Baltimore. No, it’s not like Florida here, but, I’ll tell you, in the mid summer, it gets pretty damn hot and very humid. Most days are in the mid 90’s with very high humidity. I wear a long sleeve shirt w/ a tie, pants and dress shoes everyday to work. Honestly, it’s not really all that uncomfortable to do this. Yes, it gets hot…BIG DEAL!!! Get over it!!! I guess any excuse for these people to be able to wear flip-flops to work is welcome. Sad.

You’re right radiocative…the government is great, isn’t it? Everything it touches turns to shit, yet it continues to grow and grow, so it can “fix” the shit it just f’d up.

In Chicago during summer months it gets close to 100 degrees with heat index of 120 or more, and yet I still wear dress pants and casual short sleeve shirt. What a bunch of p*ssies

What has always gotten me in recent years is this whole mindset about the hotter months and trying to stray away from the business attire for more cooler outfits. What about the people who used to wear suits, not just the jacket and pants but also the vest and long sleeve shirt, back in the old west? They did not have good old AC to cool them off but they still wore the suits none the less. So what if you sweat a little from your car to the door of your office, you can cool off when you get inside. Look at the asian people in Japan who wear suits all the time, they look professional and go to work dressed professionally. Granted, in my business, which is the computer business, I do not wear a suit and tie, but I do look professional none the less and expect my employees to look the part as well. It is simply sad to see women today in a professional environment looking like they rolled out of bed and slid into the first thing they could find, even if it were laying on he floor. As for Florida, which is where I live, my wife wears hose ALL the time to work and I admire her for it in the hotter months.

I’ve mentioned this before, but there’s this woman at my small office who wears the same four or five oversized Tshirts every week. There are those days that I swear she pulled one out of the hamper.

The sad part is although she isn’t exactly a looker, she isn’t THAT fugly, and a little effort would go a long way. Spend a few minutes with your hair, put on a little makeup, and wear (clean) clothes that actually fit you. Oh, and put on a pair of pantyhose once in a while…like DAILY!!

If there’s anybody who’s a candidate for one of those surprise makeover shows, it’s her!
