I’ve just recently ordered and recieved from Ebay a wonderful DVD that is a compliation of pantyhose TV commercials (around 90mins worth). I’ve only watched a small part of it but have already seen so many commercials that were my favorites when I was growing up. Anyway..this dvd got me thinking as to why pantyhose commercials have pretty much dissapeared over the years, and I would like to hear some other thoughts on the subject. I have a little university work in advertising, and I am by no means a subject matter expert but I do have a thought. I think, as a whole, that pantyhose commercials were quietly regarded as being just too “provacative” (for lack of a better word) for a general TV audience. By it’s very nature pantyhose commercials demand that the model be somewhat revealing, and seductive, in order to properly display the product. Now, anyone who has traveled abroad i’m sure can attest to the fact that America has a rather puritanical attitude toward things of sexual, or sensual, nature, rather than the rest of the world, and I believe that the best way to judge the state of a society in in the manner in which it is advertised to(i’m always reminded of a frame from the late “Bloom County” comic strip where one little boy chastises his father for his belief that pantyhose commercials were a threat to family values.) Any other thoughts or ideas on this subject?
