The Routt County Humane Society scrambled to vaccinate dozens of dogs after an outbreak of the deadly parvovirus, and officials fear there could be as many as 200 pets abandoned.
this article makes me soooooo mad. First off, I hate the fact that the media and others assume the the medical bills will not be paid. Say if a medical bill came out to $500, who on earth brings that kind of money to a rainbow gathering where money does no exsist? They assume that all hippies are poor. Well some of us work our asses off and make this country run. I happen to be a social worker that many people could not have some what of a normal life without. I hate how the man degrades us, but uses us. As for the price in more law enforcement, well they didn’t need all those cops. On July 4th I and others saw a few police officers carry in keggers to maincircle. They were not drinking, but they dropped them off at main circle. The only reasons that we came up with as to why they did this is to cause a fight or chaos, so that us Rainbows look bad. With beer around there is a higher chance of a fight breaking out and the law enforcement would put a stop to it and throw a "I told you so…" type of bullshit. As for the dog problem I do agree. I’m not generalizing at ALL, but I did see a lot of gutter punks let their dogs run free and start fights amongst other dogs and some of the fights occured around the children. It was AMAZING that a child did not get hurt. I was camping out by "Shut up and eat it" and there had to be an hourly dog fight. I really believe that it was the county’s fault for the most part in the loss of money. They didn’t need as big of a police force as they did. They didn’t have to throw court dates at people who only had a pipe with no drugs! I saw this happen to a sister. It really pissed me off.

The math on the hospital bills comes to almost $2000 per person….just an observation

People who don’t leash or vaccinate their animals suck! The lack of vaccinations really blows our minds; they’re free to poor folks in many cities.
Caught somebody’s dog pissing on my tent at a Dead Show.

What really pissed me off is that it’s asshole owner was on the other end of the leash watching him do it.
it is other peoples dogs not on a leash that makes it really hard to have my dog on one. we stop taking her because it is more of a chore than fun. when we were traveling everywhwere we would stop she would have to be on a leash, our national forests are no exception. when we would get to a gathering some agro dog would start somthing without fail, and i usally have kids with me. i just dont want to even deal with it anymore.
I heard a dog trainer say:

Whenever your dog does anything ‘bad’, roll up a newspaper really tight, and start hitting yourself over the head, and say "I should have been watching my puppy! I should have been watching my puppy!"
I saw a group of people there giving vaccines to dogs for free, still a break out huh??? sad…

I got an idea: Let’s list all the rainbow dogs that have died in the last 12 months. I’ll start us off.
Romanowski, Lola, Tank, Chico, Summer, Autumn, Shiva, Molly
That’s all I can think of off the top of my head and I’m not sure what happened to Lola, I’m just assuming she died of neglet. She was one of the most abused dogs I have ever seen, and she lived at Shut Up & Eat It. Both Autumn and Shiva were horribly treated as well. By the way, the first two in the list are (were) SU&EI dogs.
The way they make it sound is like they footed the bill for the party this year?

My dog goes where I go; you may see him at the VT regionals! I usually do keep him on lead until I know whether the people I’m coming upon are afraid of big dogs. Oh, and find me a better cared for dog at ANY gathering than mine…And I’ve worked with him extensively, training-wise, to the point that he wouldn’t DARE enter a kitchen area without my saying it was all right.

All we know is that dogs should be vaccinated before going to a Gathering & our dog stays leashed at a Gathering cuz she hates other dogs….

mpegs naked gay trailertrash
So if someone’s unleashed dog comes up to sniff our dog & gets bit, who’s fault is it? we certainly aren’t leaving our dog in a kennel or with a sitter, she’s been with us since she was 4 1/2 weeks old & separation from her ‘pack’ would be much more tramatic than hanging out on a leash.

Yeah I was surprised to see the "free Parvo shots" coming through, Ive heard of free rabies shots but not that, thought that was interesting … hope it helped….. but I dont think it would have taken effect soon enough to ward off anything caught at the gathering,,,

One thing I noticed about the "leashed dogs" …was the absence of the OWNERS on the other end of the leash … haha, manyyy dogs with leashes on just roaming around…

I cant count how many times I also saw the poor pups running back and forth frantically looking for owners, too. Sad.

Responsiblilty of the dog owners seems to be the real issue here. Yeesh.
the newspaper article i read said the routt county humane society imported parvo shots at a cost of $800, but that only 30 dogs got vaccinated because most owner said their dog had already been vaccinated (denver post). sounds like a good percentage of responsible pet owners to me. i know the rangers asked me if my dog had been vaccinated when i rolled in. also, there is usually a "lost dog" camp at rainbow. it’s usually on the info board. kind of a canine lost & found where they’ll be fed & kept safe ’til mom or dad catches up with them.

buckaroo goes with me everywhere and is my best friend. we are permanently on the road and my current mode of transport is his home. i am his home. he is well behaved, & loves other dogs. he is a "free-range" daschund. it’s agro dogs that should be leashed. don’t punish the good behavior.

rainbow dog story: buckaroo has the rainbow name of "speed bump" because this year in ocala the leo’s were rolling in hard. buckaroo was standing in the middle of the road so the 2 vehicles had to come to a complete stop. they honked & hit the sirens. buckaroo just looked at them, turned and started trotting slowly down the street - in the middle of the road. we all laughed at this parade of proud little pace-car dog and pissed-off officers slowly passing by.

as parking-lot scott wrote on the ceiling of my bus "dogs are people too, and some people should be on leashes".

What I can’t stand to see is cats.
Dogs kinda make sense, nomatic pack animals fit the scene…cats on the other hand are solitary terratorial critters. Your dog may or may not wanna travel with you, but that freaking kitten sure as shit don’t!
Are you sure that there is no cat that wants to travel? Our daughter Pixie’s cat used to love to travel, his favorite perch was on top of Pixie’s backpack & he was the happiest kitty ever in MO where he could hunt mice to his hearts content and the bonus was that there were no mice sneaking into our kitchen’s supply tent.

Pets at the Gathering are no problem in our view as long as owners are not irresponsible; bury their shit, make sure they have enough food & water, keep shots up to date & if your pet is going to be a distrubance to others, leash it (hopefully unleashed dogs & cats are smart enough to stay away from our leashed dog when she growls, luckily she is the type that gives a warning. this artical makes me sad.. my 4 month old pup slipped his collar in the dark the morning of the fourth.. I had to leave the next day before I found him, but my kids found him and gave him to a good home. I was in new orleans for 4 months before co and took care of 4 puppies who were sick and needed homes. I took them to vets, got them healthy, and gave all but 2 to good homes. I consider myself a good dog owner.. but still one of my pups ran away. sometimes shitty stuff happens..
I always have problems with unleashed dogs, it really pisses me off that people can’t keep their dogs leashed (and keep their hands on the other end of the leash). My pooch is always leashed (he’s a husky so he loves to run off when free) at gatherings, and never causes problems unless agro dogs come up to him. He was attacked at the California gathering by 2 huge pitbulls that latched onto either side of his neck. They just came up to him and latched on, really weird. I can’t believe people just let dogs like that roam around, especially pitbulls (nothing against the breed, but they are usually bred to fight and have lock-jaw). I saw so many unleashed dogs, many of which came up to Juneau (my pooch) and growled or started shit. It’s just sad that people put their dogs in a situation where they can get in fights. We really need to enforce the leash rule. Even for dogs that are normally fine off-leash, the sheer amount of dogs makes leashes a necessity. I thanked many responsible pet owners for leashing their dogs, and suggested to many irresponsible ones that they keep their animals on a leash. Dog fights are no fun. Luckily Juneau wasn’t involved in any this year, but there were a few close calls. We carried a walking stick to separate dogs if necessary.

Juneau loves traveling, and has horrible separation anxiety so we wouldn’t dream of leaving him in a kennel. He’s our child, basically. And we care for him as such. I just wish that the other pet owners cared enough for their animals to keep a close eye (and leash) on them. Next time I think I will buy a bunch of cheap leashes or ropes and start handing them out to pet owners.
I really do think it depends on the dog. Pits should DEFINATELY be leased, but if a gang of weiners rome the area….big deal??? Some dogs can deal, others can’t. Some just stay right by their owners, leash or not (certainly not my lab, but….he’s a leasher). Those are fine. Let them have their doggie adventure, just keep you freakin’ eye on them. They are furry children.

i have never heard someone say they are a bad dog owner…..and losing a pet would pop you in that catagory……
ok heres a story
im sitting by the fire in the vegas lounge my 14 month olld and three year old were visiting my camp, they were down in kid village with there mom,
this dogs kickin around and started growling at my children but it woul;d be shoowed away, I ask around and these fuckin clowns are sitting by there tent bitching that my kids are around….
I walk up and say hey man your dogs do they bite? they say yep, so im like dude putr your dogs on a leash then I dont want my kids bit….from there a huge freaking argumnet ensued about which had the right to run around children or fucking vicious dogs……

dont bring your fucking pets to gatherings…….or if you really have to
why not keep them on a leash…they are fucking animals domesticated or not they can go off in strange environments…..bite my kids the dogs dead end of story
The LEOs didnt bring the kegs to main circle A Camp did. They walked right past me and my husband. One of the guys who was carrying a keg was Mouse from A Camp. They knocked down one of the elders who was tryin to stop them from goin to main circle. He sat there for a few mins but finally got up. They didnt go all the way down into main circle they stood next to a tree right outside of main circle and drank their beer as a tribute to a brother who died in the past year and then they left.

Actually, my fucking dog loves going on tour & to gatherings. His first 3 summers he spent traveling in a van, he is 10 now. He has been to several gatherings ( national & 4 regionals ) & there were outright rude people yelling at me as i walked along the trail with him. I am chef, and have spent my time cooking in kitchens, 99 pa national at half moon kitchen, and i did a one night thing in ocala once called the 3eyed cafe.

I have decided that the next national i can get to i am going to do a styled out kitchen called Duncan’s Kitchen, and make yummy diggity food, mmmmm. But anyone who bitches about Duncan ( my dog ) being in the kitchen, will be asked to leave and not to return looking for a meal for the rest of the gathering.

I love my dog & have trained him well, in new york city he was able to walk off leash because he is that trained. I do not let him run off & cause problems, not all dog owners are careless people, not all dogs are jerks. Above all i am tired of piss ass people yelling at me as i walk by with a dog. People who do not even know me, just the usual high holy people who are controll freaks & want to try to boss everyone around.
why not just open a dog food kitchen for the dogs… instead of playing hiholy and deciding who is able to eat at a kitchen at a rainbow gathering?

Somehow…. IMHO… someone should not even run a kitchen if that is the attitude they possess!

What is next?

Charging for meals at your kitchen??
wow if we charge money maybe we can get better food and smaller lines.
i think we can get sponsers, maybe for a dog kitchen we can get dog food sponsers.
we could then start saying who can and cant be there. it would be a utopia.

Namaste everyone. Iv’e been away for several long months working etc etc. But i have returned to hipforums/rainbow family with much love and fond memories of alot of you in Ocala. I never made my report of Ocala 06. I just logged back on to read this important dog issue thread, and due to direct experience, i want to make a comment.

I brought my very awesome 10 year old un-neutered male, Buddha to Ocala and as always, had him leashed 100%. We always have a wonderful time together, gatherings are good for his soul too, being out in the forest, etc. and he has a great following of people who adore him, with his very thoughtful and friendly ways. But, his uber-maleness naturally attracts all the big bad bullies that are running loose constantly on the trails. It made it a freaking ordeal to just walk anywhere, without having to beat back pits and rots with a big stick to break up fights when they came up to Buddha looking to role play dominate games. Buddha is a total ass-kicking fearless fighter, protecting me really, as he should be doing. But he is 10 now and i don’t want him to have to go through that. It is absolutely exhausting to have to deal with this all the time at gatherings due to others that will not be responsible to the family. There were many, many brothers and sisters at Ocala that were outraged at the amount of *bad* dogs ruining the peace and freedom of the gathering. And there were pit owners as well that were calling for dogs on the leash. For instance, Pooh Bear and his partner ( a beautiful couple indeed) had a pit that was totally under control and well behaved. They were a great example for everyone. Folks want to enjoy their dogs, like their kids, just having fun. But basically lots of people were really perplexed and upset about this wild dog problem.
So, on our last day, my brother James and i were at the end of the trail, getting ready to load up our gear. I was standing there talking to some sweet kids, saying goodbye etc, when Buddha and a seriously mean unleashed pit got into it. I got knocked down in the dirt with this psycho pitbull charging Buddha, with me basically in between them, teeth and fur flying everywhere. Buddha did what he had to do. The dogs owner was not what i consider to be a rainbow brother, but a mean looking dude in alot of army gear, big black boots, etc. (someone who tries to look scary) I say he was not seeming like a rainbow brother, not because of his clothes of course, but by his attitude of entitlement to behave anyway he wanted to, regardless of rainbow ethics. i had to set him straight with my own version of fearlessness. He was surprised to say the least. He was so arrogant and agro, trying to further intimidate me when i told him in no uncertain terms to GET HIS DOG ON A LEASH.. After i got up from the ground, i was pretty upset. Who wouldn’t be? It’s terrifying. Not to mention upset that my dog got attacked at the end of an awesome gathering. He acted like he and his dog were entitled to do anything they wanted, the rest of us be damned. This is not a Rainbow attitude!!! So yeah, i had to repeat this demand several times with much emphasis to get it thru his thick head to get his out of control and dangerous dog on a leash. He finally apologized, but i doubt if he kept his dog under control for anybody else’s sake.
I don’t want to have to go thru this kind of routine again, but i love having my dog with me (on a leash) in the forest for all the right reasons. (And there will be many other gatherings for us.) Dogs in general are great fun to have at gatherings, like children, it would be so strange & sterile without them there. Of course, i realize that dogs act like dogs, they like to mix it up, but the idea is a leash with an owner on the other end prevents things from getting out of control. But it seems the worst, predatory dogs are running loose. Our children are also in such danger of being attacked and mauled. It’s insane. What is the solution to this very un-rainbow indifference?
(Other than that, for me, my dog and friends, this years Ocala gathering was wonderful. So many other beautiful memories! ) i am sure i am preaching to the choir here. But anyway, blessings, otter

I have been to several Rainbows in the past where there was a doggie kitchen. Folks could bring their dogs there for the day with water and food, and tie them to trees. There were folks there who looked after them while the owners were away… Someone just needs to do it, that’s all.
I have a question which I will ask at the end of this.
Of course dogs can cause problems. I love my dog, I give him a good life. In my mind, part of that is a leash free life (except where it would endanger himself or someone else).
The argument seems to be that a leash is a preventative measure, to help decrease the chances of anything bad happening. You’re also talking about restriction, lack of freedom and in my minf that is negative.
Children can also act on instinct, but no one has of yet suggested leashing them. Not only socialization but the ability to make decisions for oneself are necessary to develop, mature and integrate oneself into a community. I fail to see the difference between children and dogs.
Its not a question of whether or not preventative measures should be taken, of course they should; in the form of training, owner/companion alertness etc.
My dog is almost always free of a leash except when I sit/lay down at which point he becomes protective. He likes our campsite to be left alone. When we are up and around during they day and he is approached by another dog he’ll always do the polite introduction and then he wants to walk away. He will run from the other dog it is only if it pursues him that he will attack. If he is on a leash and unable to get away he’ll attack immediately.
I feel comfortable keeping him off leash because his lack of interest in people or animals, he wants to be left alone.
Once again a non issue if the dog’s people are aware of what their dog is doing.
But anywhere I go my dog also goes…always. My van is our home.
Thankyou if you’ve read this far. The reason I put this out here is with the hope that I will recieve some feedback. I would like to know if folks on here share my opinion or if they think my dog and I should refrain from attending gatherings? (hes never been in a fight at one, but it doesn’t mean he never will be).

I have 8 dogs left, they don’t get out in public much like me. I go into town once or twice a month for supplies. The few times I have taken one dog into public, aggressive or not, they act real anxious. New sights, new smells, strange sounds. Dogs are territorial by nature and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to subject this animal to a place it would naturally try to defend space around it that it has no claim to. It messes with their minds. If a dog gets loose, whereever it is at, it can go beserk if another human or animal gets to close. People can rub shoulders in public without hardly even noticing each other, dogs can’t usually. Dem thar iz me 2 cents worth.

There isn’t much difference between dogs butt sniffing and people focusing on each others negative emotional waste products like anger and fear. The diff is it doesn’t come out of the butt with people, it comes outta the brain.
