i cant wait.. it’ll be my first gathering! a bunch of my friends have been going for years and i wanted to go 2 summers ago to WV and last summer to CO.. but due to my traveling plans i was in Africa both summers (and what an amazing time that was : Kenya + Tanzania in summer of ‘05, Egypt in summer of ‘06).. so needless to say i did miss them but i was in the motherland….. hope everyone is having an amazing nite! see u all @ ocala hopefully

Doesnt it suck, having to go to school? Haha, I know the feeling… Usually, ocalla is a gathering I miss, because all my life, all the bad rainbow stories Ive heard start with, "This one time, in Ocalla"… So, personally, I wont go. Florida scares me. But with the bad comes the good as well, I know many brothers and sisters who have had no problems there. My words of wisdom are just, be careful family.
I agree with Jo, always be careful. But at the same time, sometimes life’s greatest adventures come from taking a calculated risk. Last year, I went to Ocala alone. I was assuming there would be people there that I know, and there was, but I ended up spending almost all of my time with new people I just met. I flew last year and, yes, it was cheaper than driving. I hitched from Orlando to the gathering site in two rides. Even with the hour I spent having breakfast in the town of Ocala, I only took like 4 or 5 hours from the airport to the woods.
Last year was awsome.. and this year is gona be just as awsome, over the past 3-4 yrs its been getting better and better, ive been going for about 20 yrs now with the exception of a few yrs, met a lot of people and have grown to care about them all..

I have a really good feeling about it. I’ve been wanting to go to a gathering for a few years, but this is the first time that I’ve had actual plans. I have three other people with me so I have no doubt we will have a great time.

I’ve also been to that town, and through it, traveling a few times, so I don’t think it can be too bad. I was just going to start a thread about the Gathering, asking about children. Do people bring children, what ages, is it a good idea, is it fun for the children, etc.?
Ocala was my very first gathering back in ‘94 and I’ve been several times and then was at nationals in ‘04. Yeah if you can do it. Ocala National Forest is very beautiful and the florida tribe is very cool. They gotta be as it is so hot and muggy most of the year. Yeah there are some folks there that ain’t so cool, but it was the same story at nationals. If I can find a ride for me and my son we will definitely be going. We may just hop a bus and go if we can’t find a ride. Its a hop skip and a jump from my daughters place. I haven’t seen her in a while and now she a missus. Remember "Adam" from Northern Exposure he was there in ‘02. I was standing next to him at Main Circle. He’s a pretty cool dude. I got lots of old friends and I do mean "old" friends who go there most every year. If I can get there by hook or by crook I’ll see ya’ll there.

Was anyone at that mind blowing drum circle during the last gathering in Ocala, when I swear we made it rain from a clear sky? I don’t know yet if I am going to attend this one, but I might given circumstances. This coming spring and summer I kind of want to do a musical hobo thing and hope to find a road dog along the way. All I know is I really miss Colorado and reading about the rainbow makes me more nostalgic for home!

It will be very very cold at night, make sure to bring blankets, jackets, long johns, this is not a warm part of Florida during the night during the winter.
Yeah, but it sure is hot here now. I’ll tell you that. But the weather does get weird during the winter. Some days will be scorching while the next day you’ll be freezing to death. But late winter, those scroching days go away.

Fleece and Cotton = Warmness but Fleece = staticyness.
I’m trying to get down to the gathering in Ocala, and could use some help getting there or some people to meet up with when I get there, I just broke up with my boyfriend after getting my ass kicked one two many times and him threatening to kill me. Usually we tour, but I’ve been told repeatedly by him that if I show up at at a show, he’ll kill me, I can’t risk that, I’m tired of the fake people out there and I really need to get back to my roots and in with some family. I’m currently in CT but can hitch hike wherever. I have nothing right now. But can work, and have lots to offer, Anything helps

My girl and I are going; we live in Florida. I can’t wait. I’ll be chick with the ace looking Russian wolfhound dogs (who are quiet and well behaved). Can’t wait, hope to hook up with some old friends and make lots of new ones, too. I have spent a lot of time in Ocala, in the woods and in town. I have made good use of the food and other things available in Ocala- pretty decent place to stop and chill

I dont remember much of Ocala, or what year I was there. All I remember is the trails that flying bugs left in front of my vision.
i’m sort of kicking around the idea of heading out there this year.

if i can get some funds together, and pay ahead a few months on my mortgage i’m looking at hitting up chicago, and nyc to visit some friends, and then heading down there. while nothing is set in stone, i’m thinking this is probably going to happen for me.

Dude?, get out of the cold?, the ocala gathering is cold as fuck, everyone needs to understand that this is northern, central Florida, it is very cold during the winter, bring warm winter clothing & lots of blankets, it is winter camping, come prepaired.
Uh no it’s not… it’s not that cold… even "Northern, central Florida" is WAY warmer than just about any other place in the country in February. We also have days in Feb where it is disgustingly, miserably hot- 80s, 90s… hell, TODAY is the first truly nice cool day we have had here in Tampa Bay in a couple weeks, and prob the coldest day of the year so far- and it’s still 60 or so. Last time I camped out in Ocala in February, I didn’t even have a tent, and I survived So it would definitely be a break for those up in the ice and snow.
I guess your idea of winter camping and mine are different. I live in Upstate N.Y. and a trip to Florida in February is not my idea of winter camping. Yes,the nights get cold,but not nearly as cold,as it’s up here. All I know is that when I’m down there I can wear shorts,t-shirt and get some wonderful rays of the Sun.
To me the cool or your words cold nights do need to be prepared for. I do agree with that,but as I said it’s a lot warmer & sunnier in Florida then most parts of the country this time of year,and it’s not really the weather,but to be with Family, which really warms you and shines on you.
Oh,by the way it’s 20 at Noon,with snow on the ground,how does that compare?
Last year I flew out to Ocala. When I was parking my car at the airport I was wearing a winter coat, wool hat and gloves. I thought to myself, ‘hell, I’m going to Florida. It’s warm in Florida and I don’t need any of this snow country gear’ and I took off my coat, hat, and gloves and left for Florida with only a jacket. Let me tell you, it got friggin’ cold there for a couple of days and I found myself huddled next to the fire at night and feeling all kinds of unprepared. It was only like maybe 40 degrees at night, but each evening this fog rolled in and the damp cold went right through my meager layers of clothing. I think 40 degrees at 90% humidity feels colder than 20 degrees at 20% humidity.
In the two weeks I was there the weather changed from wet and rainy to cold and damp to warm and sunny. There was four or five days of warm sunny days and mild evenings when I slept with my bag unzipped.
Yes, I agree it can get damp & cold at night down there and be prepared for it,but all I’m saying is it’s much nicer than most of the country at that time of year and again the Family makes it so much nicer.
So everyone come to Florida and hopefully it makes your winter a little nicer in many ways.

I agree it’s a lot better than winter here in the north, but yeah it still gets cold there. Night rain is really the thing you have to prepare against. I didn’t have a tent last year and was generally warm by the fire until that night it poured, then I froze my butt off. ;]

I sure could take this weather right now. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly that you must Be Prepared for all types of weather and yes,it can & does get cold there at nights and can be miserable if you are not prepared and thank goodness for the campfires and also for all of the caring people that will help you if you are not prepared. So when you come,bring those warm clothes,rain gear,tents and a little extra for your brothers & sisters who might not be prepared. Oh,and don’t forget to bring your hugs,as they are quite warming.
As for I,my visit to Ocala will be a warming experience,not only in the physical sense but in the Spiritual sense to be with a Loving & Caring Family.
Enough about the weather for me. I’ll see you in Ocala.

i will definately attend and schedule time off work once the logistics for the gathering are finalized.

anyone from southeast louisiana planning to attend? i do not own a car and would be more than will to share expenses and driving time. if not, i may rent a car, greyhound, or fly and get camping equipment at the campground.
It looks like the coldest temp for that gathering was 20 degrees in Feb of 1996.

I dont think its gona be at hidden pond, went for a walk and its all chared coal black,Dry,and Dusty from a controled burn in earlier this year, more likely at farles or just north of salt springs..Hopefully Farles

Yeah, I’m sure there’s lots of generosity. But there are a lot of longtime family who believe that preparation and self-reliance is best taught by discomfort. This was a subject I heard a LOT about at the one national I attended, and more than a few people were trying to sleep out in the rain with no blanket. If you show up unprepared and expecting others to look out for you, you may find that these people have so much love for you that they will help you to make sure you never do something like that again!

On the other hand, I’ll admit, I did once go camping with NO preparation, I just showed up. Not so much as a sleeping bag. I got very lucky, hehehe and stayed warm and dry. Well, warm at least
taken to its extream , one would let babys and domestic animals starve get sick n die cause they are unprepared to ‘take care of themselves ‘….most tough love senearios are just indifferance , selfishness and cruelty . we are not an ocean of independant and individualy able beings …….we lived in small societys forever. we are interdependant , and rely on mutual aid and assistance constantly …..if one can help someone , cause of an excess of tallent or aquired material , then its a joyfull priveledge to be helping those who do not .

i think plants are a higher form of spiritual entity than animals. you ever sit in the forest and listen to them? just cause we dont understand how they "feel" or "think" doesnt mean they don’t. i can’t feel bad about eating animals, and not feel bad about eating plants too. our phisical body needs to consume another body to survive, be it plant or animal. thats the way it works. everyone that eats is a killer.

i used to live in ocala bu i have not yet had the chance to go…due to the fact that i am underage. i do want to go though, but im still 17 and i cant leave in the middle of the school year, that’s for sure. i shall go next year though hopefully. i dont know why it cant be held during the summertime when nobodys in college or anything.
rainbow nationals are held in july on "hippie independence day" and it looks like that will be in the arkansas/oklahoma area sister. maybe we’ll see you there. your area probably has regional gatherings in the summer too. just check the net. be safe.

2007 Florida Vision Council Consensus

Florida Family Vision Council convened after much tromping around trying to recognize the shattered landscape of Farles Prairie. A group of 17 set out on Saturday to check the conditions. We were encouraged by the rapidly dropping water levels and alarmed by all the down and dead trees, especially near the water.

Two of us had spent an entire month on Farles Prairie in 2000 and I spent another month there in 1995. We couldn’t even find the main trail. After lots of back and forth, the crew was whittled down to 3 hardcores who made it all the way to Farles Lake Campground via the Florida Trail.

The white trail that connected the Florida Trail to the Kid Village site in 2000 and 1995 is gone. The archipelago inhabited by Bliss Kitchen in 1995 and Camp Zippolite in 2000 is a twisted mess of dead trees. The "grove" of Aztec Grove (2000) is a meadow. The dense tree cover that made it hard to find a place to camp next to the Funk is no more; but the open space is nice too.

We took another hike Sunday morning and returned as Council was forming at Third Hammock; which was unfortunately occupied by local folks camping. So we had to council out in a field next to the hammock. (Note to self: someone camp on the Hammock next year).

The decision before Council was clear: Put in the effort to make Farles Prairie usable for the first time in 7 years or use another more easily accessible site. After a few times around with the feather, it was clear that Family was up to the task. A weekend at Farles Prairie is a tease. We wanted more.

In spite of seriously disrespectful and intentional interruptions and outbursts by a drunken clown trying to intimidate Council, Family reached consensus in silence to gather at Farles Prairie in 2007.
im happy things are going so well …..and im trying to get down that way as soon as possible to see how things are shapeing up ……..much thanks and lots of love to all folks who are working to make this possible
Whoo hoo! I can’t wait……As I remember it was either 1991 or m1992 it got to 20 mdegrees at night. That’s cold for hippies camping in the woods…so be prepared….of course with global warming and all….

hey, i am concerned about the family gathering right now, in the wake of the tornado’s blowing through last night. I’m not sure where that was in relation to the site. Does anybody have info on the folks/kids dogs/babies hippies in the woods in florida right now??? Prayin’ your’e all ok!
Spoke to family onsite. All spent a long, rainy, and windy night but emerged with no known problems. Seed camp at Farles Prarrie w/ 50 or so at this point. A signed permit is in place, as far as I know…

Looking forward to seeing all soon.
