OK, I can’t remember where I saw it, and if it’s still around, please move this to it. But I was reading another topic a while ago and you got on to the question of are there any films or TV shows where being gay isn’t the central theme. So I was thinking about it for ages and came up with a couple and thought other people could put ones that they can thinkof and so on.

So far I got the Simpsons - Mr. Smithers
and "The Third Man" With Orson Welles in it. There’s an implicit reference between the doctor and one of the witnesses, I can’t remember his name…

I was thinking this thread the other day and thought of another movie.

Billy Elliot.

The movie is brilliant and despite being rated R, I think it should be shown to people of all ages. The message it perpetuates is a powerful one and important yet simple. Be yourself, follow your aspirations and define your life by what makes you happy and not how other’s would like you to be.

I don’t want to give too much away but the story basically involves a young boy who is pressured into doing something he doesn’t really like doing by his father. There is something he wants to do but he knows his father and others close to him may think it is unacceptable. The whole story is applicable to being gay and hiding it and eventually coming out and exploring the reactions of friends and family.

Anyway, back to the point of the topic. One of Billy’s (the main character) friends is gay. There is a bit of awkwardness in their friendship but eventually Billy is accepting. There is a wonderful scene at the end of the movie where Billy’s gay friend is sitting with another boy whom is presumably his boyfriend.

Billy’s friend being gay isn’t the point of the film but there are aspects that tie into the main plot.

I highly encourage everyone to check it out. I don’t know how it managed to get an R rating.
