Rainbow rental returns wrecked

By

Tuesday, July 11, 2006

A few casualties emerged from the woods in North Routt County on Monday and made their way to a Steamboat Springs collision repair shop.

A man who said he was coming from the Rainbow gathering, 35 miles north of Steamboat Springs, looked beaten up and was not talking clearly because his face was swollen when he entered the Custom Color shop Monday, said the shop’s owner Dave Mihaich.

"All his front teeth were as loose as could be," Mihaich said.

The man’s rental car was in bad shape, as well. Mihaich estimated the cost to repair damage to the 2006 Ford Focus at $15,181.06.

The damage was mostly cosmetic, but the car, which retails for $9,400, was totaled.

The man, who Mihaich described as "filthy" with dreadlocks down to his thighs, said the damage occurred to the car after he visited "A-camp," where drugs and alcohol were prevalent. The man also said he was beaten up there, Mihaich said.

"He pulled into A-camp, and they pretty much pummeled him," Mihaich said the man told him.

The week-long gathering attracted an estimated 15,000 hippies and counterculture enthusiasts.

It officially ended Friday, but some gatherers are staying to clean up.

John Centner, general manager of Steamboat Motors, said the man rented the car about a week and a half ago.

Despite concern expressed by many business owners about gatherers coming to town, the business rented the man the car.

"He had all the right credentials. We wanted to be good stewards, and we didn’t want to be discriminatory, so we rented him the car," Centner said.

The car was not returned on time, and the business charged the man’s credit card for the additional days.

After a charge was declined Friday, Centner said the business reported the car stolen to police.

The car finally appeared Monday.

"I was shocked to see the damage," Centner said. "Every panel on the car is dented. In 27 years of being in the car business, short of a wreck, I’ve never seen that type of damage to a car."

Centner said it was too early to tell whether the renter had insurance. The car runs well, but it likely will be treated as junk and auctioned for salvageable materials, Mihaich said.

The car was covered in dust, the spare tire was missing, and nearly every window was missing or had been smashed.

There was broken glass, and an odor lingered in the car.

"You kind of feel gross just touching it," Mihaich said.

All that remained inside the car was an empty Swiss Miss hot chocolate packet, a fist-sized rock sitting on the floor of the back seat and a bag of pure sugar cane in the glove box.

"They just absolutely trashed this car, and everyone paints a real rosy picture, and I just thought people should see the remnants of the Rainbows’ visit to Steamboat Springs," Centner said.
An a-camper with the right credentials to rent a car? Not old a-camp style at all; buying a limo for beer runs is old a-camps style, ‘borrowing’ someones rental for beer runs maybe, but most of those were returned in good order with a full tank of gas

Either a dreadie-feddie or a dreadie drunk who didn’t know what he was getting into
I have reason to believe this was Thomas JAH LOVE! from NoCal. At any rate, something like this hapened to Thomas in CO. His worst habbits, as far as I know, are shouting JAH LOVE! at the top of his lungs all day for no apparent reason, and smoking lots and lots of really good pot. Not a bad guy.
we know jah love, they have a nice place in cali, and lots of really good pot.

crazy shit man…
saw some a campers on the fourth they brought a keg into main cirlce…….kinda fucked to see, some one said it was for a wake, some one said beer was bieng sold, someone said they beat up some guys who hassled them about it,
another said calm came down and made them give only one away top everyone so the keg would be despersed but nop one would get drunk……

one thing about those A campers is alot of folk talk about those cats…

Just to dispel more rainbow rumors, YES there was indeed and unfortunately a keg at main circle. NO nobody was selling the crap. And, the person who got beat up was none of us who were there asking them to take it away. That happened a day later, though it did have something to do with alcohol, of course.
thanks montana mama..

anyone that ever met luke,, may not have agreed,, but ya gotta respect the love..

he will be missed..

the thing with the keg at main circle…. it was not being sold… no one got beat up… it was sort of for Luke, but also to prove that there can be alcohol without violence, and that we should not be "herded" into one specific area just because we occasionally want a beer! I personally think it’s unfair. the agro-drunks should stay up front, yes… but I don’t think it’s wrong to be at my own camp (OR my own kitchen for that matter) and have a drink or two… and as long as none of us get agro… no one else should care either…. and yet….
anyway… I just thought I’d clear that up….

Is social order an issue?
So its ok to drink, but not get drunk? Sounds like the fucking bible.

I saw the kegs being brought down to main circle and I didn’t see anything bad happen. I had a bottle of wine at my camp and I wasn’t aware of the "no drinks" rule and someone saw my bottle and freaked out on me like i was doing crack or something. So I saw people running full speed and jumping up and down screaming that they lost their minds in the area that I was camping at….so it’s ok to be on lsd or whatever they decided to ingest, but i’m wrong for wanting to drink some wine?
peter said unto Paul, "have a little wine for thy stomach’s sake,"

for certain reasons we gona have a few drinks, if ya dont want us to be agro then dont make us agro…
Do people get jumped like that at a Rainbow Family gathering?I’ve never been to one before but if that happens it seems like the only safe way to go is with a lot of people that have your back.

Sorry to hear about this and heard from folks who went from Woodstock it was a great time.
Wouldn’t let something like this screw up any future gatherings.

There are plenty of rumors about people getting beat up at nationals. I’m beginning to think that’s all they are. The earliest rumor I heard was that someone was beat up for confronting the people with the keg…..A person that rode home with me after the Gathering claimed to have witnessed someone get beat up at the Agro Redneck camp- supposedly an A-Camper gone to raise hell, and supposedly "asking for it", and had to be taken to the hospital. If the person "asks for it", is it acceptable to beat them? Yesterday I gave a ride to two young sisters who told me that there was a stabbing (or more than one!)….Hadn’t heard that before. Is something being swept under the rug here? Or, are rumors just being spread and growing as we speak…..
Some things are rumors, some aren’t; but Rainbow definately isn’t all about fighting.

We don’t let alcohol in our kitchen cuz a lot of our crew are alcoholics who want to stay dry for a while (or are recovering alcoholics who just can’t be around it). The keg for Luke was understandable to us but we can see why some folks tripped out; some folks don’t relate to the fact that sometimes respect for an old Family bro wins out over tradition. Heck, y’all should have heard the freak out at Main Circle when our crew decided to serve counter-clockwise! (we are the counter culture ya know!)
Are you kidding me, this happend at a "Hippie" gathering about love?

Thats like the muslums who throw firebombs at churches becasue the pope said Violence is a bad way to spread reigion.
just gos to show we are all diffrent..

how do ya expect to love all, without excepting all??/

and how do ya purpose ya control each and everyone who chooses to act in a manner that you deem offensive?
moreover,,
nevermind..

^Whats so accepting about totaling a man car and beating him up?

The KKK must be a real accepting orginization by that logic.
thought the conversation had moved to the keg in main circle.

as far as the original post & the beating; well is that the whole story? we (the hippiestead folks) don’t like people getting beat up at Gatherings but sometimes there are reasons (still don’t condone beatings, but some people don’t know how any other way-makes more sense to try to teach those kind of folks a better way than to ban them from Gatherings as has been suggested in other threads this summer)

and our acceptance post was kind of directed at some of the other posts on this thread; so many different gripes on this & the ‘let’s bitch about Nationals’ thread and a lot of them are clashes of people’s personal trips. There are so many agendas being pushed around that folks forget the basics & that’s just sad. Maybe if everyone who’s been pushing an agenda put their energy into stopping the big problems, like the violence that seems to be invading Gatherings, then maybe those problems would get better.
i can’t say i know the truth of the story as i didn’t make it this year(or last year or last year) but if alcohol was involved then it’s certainly possible it’s a true story. In general, most people won’t bother you about a bottle of wine(or whatever) at a Gathering if you keep it in your camp and don’t get trashed and throw your drunk vibe on everyone else. i can understand folks freaking out over a keg at main circle though. That’s just stupid. You can call it whatever you want, but any old time A-camper knows alcohol isn’t welcome at main circle, or in most public areas at a Gathering. If you gotta be an alcoholic, keep it in your tent. If i wanna see drunks i just have to go downtown, i certainly don’t have to travel cross country to a peaceful gathering just to see drunks and when they do try to throw their messed up vibe on the Gathering its a shame. Healing doesn’t happen at the bottom of a bottle of booze. Never has, never will. All booze does is steal your soul and make you empty. That said, i would hope anyone considering going to a Gathering wouldn’t take this tale as normal for what happens at Rainbow. There’s a lot of love inside the Gatherings(not drunk "oh i love ya man" love) and a lot of beauty and healing. That’s why when i show up at Rainbow i dart right past A-camp and get into the woods and stay there working in kitchens and diggin shitters and haulin wood and water and dancin and drumming at the fires.
soooo I have heard through a grapevine this man’s story… take it with salt since it’s third-generation from "I was there."

The guy parked in a bunch of people toward the end of the gathering. If you were there, you know what parking was like. A group of many people tried to get guy to park elsewhere. Guy insisted he would be right back. It got dark and guy was not back. Someone had to leave who was parked in by guy. Guy’s car was picked up and moved by large group of people, who gave it a few dents for good (well, not so good) measure. Guy comes back in morning and freaks out about car, gets violent and is drunk. So he gets beat up worse (when it’s out in the lot like this it’s hard to pinpoint on any one camp) by a bunch of folk, and guy’s car is smashed more.

Anyone want to come up with a moral to that story?

I took several pictors of the A-campers walking down to the main circle. They’ll be onlind soon.
Badger tried to stop them, but was dragged to the ground. He was slow getting up, but he looked alright.
They brought in their keg, drunk it in memery of Luke, and then felt. Besides the inccident with Badger, they caused no problems.

That is awful that someone should be beaten senseless at a gathering where ‘peace and love’ are meant to prevalent. And why? Just because he had dreads and got on some people nerves? That does’nt sound like a good reason (if such a thing exists) to knock someones teeth out.

Chooey’ Grange guilty of drug-ring murders
Spokesman Review, The (Spokane), Feb 18, 2001 by John Craig Staff writer

Portland resident John D. "Chooey" Grange was convicted Saturday of silencing two Rainbow Family drug-ring snitches by shooting them to death and burning their bodies last June when they were spotted at the Northport Bartre Faire.

Grange, 26, faces about 40 to 53 years in prison for the first- degree murders of Joshua Schaefer and Nick Kaiser, both 21, at a primitive cabin in the mountains 15 miles north of Colville. His use of a firearm may add five to 10 years to the total when Stevens County Superior Court Judge Rebecca Baker passes sentence March 29.

Prosecutor Jerry Wetle said the case gave county residents an unusual glimpse of the big-money, highstakes drug deals that occur in big cities with marijuana grown in rural northeastern Washington.

Within the counterculture Rainbow Family are drug rings that deal in huge sums of money and sometimes resort to violence to protect their interests, Wetle said.

Man admits cover-up…

A man convicted of the drug related murders of two fellow members of the Rainbow Family was sentenced Friday to the maximum 63-1/2 years in prison.

Now 26, convicted trigger man John D. "Chooey" Grange likely will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Also Friday, two accomplices who testified against Grange received maximum one-year jail terms for rendering criminal assistance by helping cover up the murders last July.

Jeff Cunningham, 25, and Dane M. Williams, 27, helped Grange put the bodies into a vehicle and set it afire near the primitive cabin where the two 21-year-old victims were shot to death.

A hunter found the victims’ bones about three months later on a logging road about 15 miles north of Colville. Nick Kaiser of Waynesboro, Pa., was identified from dental records. The body of San Diego resident Josh Schaefer was burned so badly it could be identified only through the testimony of Cunningham and Williams.

Kaiser’s mother, Judy Kaiser, said the hardest day of her life was when sheriff’s officers called to say they’d found her son’s vehicle, "and could we please send his dental records."

John "Chewy" Grange

63 years

My name is John "Chewey" Grange and my case is unusual to this organization. I was convicted of two murders. Both of the men killed I would have felt privileged to call a friend and the two men that testified against me, I did consider as friends.

I grew up in a bad neighborhood with not many opportunities away from hard labor or drug dealing. I was one of the ones to choose work. I have worked construction almost my entire life doing everything from plumbing to finish carpentry, to roofing. I started in these pursuits at an age of 15.

The prosecutor decided to make me out to be an enforcer and "hit man" for a fictitious drug organization that even the DEA testified did not exist. My two friends were given deals of one year to testify that I had committed these crimes. I was given life. There was no evidence against me, but for their words against me. What physical evidence was left, proved that they had not been telling the truth.

My entire world has been turned around because of this. I have been in prison for over two years. I have lost family members and have not been allowed to even go to their funerals. The girl I was going to marry left me, seeing no hope in justice being served. My mother still tells me how she cries every time she thinks about where I am.

I had never been convicted of a crime in my life and figured like most people that as long as I followed the laws I wouldn’t. I would like to return home to my life, but with this current system it seems almost impossible.

Support is rare, so if you think you can support me or any one of these people on the wall, please contact someone and offer what you can. Thank you.

There’s three sides to every story– yours and mine and the cold hard truth (Don Henley). Thank you Hippiestead for presenting side two. The main reason I posted it is I was wondering if perhaps this might explain the muddled rumors regarding Rainbows murdering other Rainbows………
ah well, beer in the main circle, for whatever reason, is kinda sad to me. it’s the kind of thing that would have me getting up and walking away. i go to gatherings to try to escape the mundane bullshit of the workaday world and the presense of booze swilling drunks is one of those things i hope to avoid. if i wanted to hang out with drunks and smell their beer i’d go down to the local bar instead of trudging my camp gear miles into the woods. A Camp already owns the front gate, they even have their own bar but now a presedence has been set for it to be okay to bring booze into the main circle. doesn’t seem fair somehow that i’m suppose to be accepting of their desires to drink but they need not be accepting of my desire not to be around them when they do. **shrug** i guess there’s no point in asking if there’s a backdoor around A camp as it seems the gathering is becoming one big A Camp. may as well stay home.
